There are only a few more days until my favorite coming of age retro ritual makes its comeback. I’m referring to, of course, the Bar Mitzvah Disco that’s happening this Saturday! Half the incentive to attend is to relive my fashion “don’t” era by parading around in eighties ensembles that should have never left the house- let alone made it to the runways. So grab your bf, bffs, and/ or beau of the moment and make sure to match your crimped hair to his equally entertaining flock of seagulls do, and get yourselves to the dance floor. At least this time the horah won’t be such a horror, thanks to the little issue of an open bar you can now fully enjoy! See you there this Saturday, and I’d get your tickets asap, so you can turn your attention to more important details, like which spandexy mistake of a skirt will out 80’s your inner circle of friends. Everybody wants to rule the world, but only a select few can rule the dance floor.

Online Dating
In supposedly a voyeuristic manner I enjoy reading profiles (yes, I look at more than the photo) and reading others perspectives on their ideal and lessons learned. A good majority of profiles are generic in nature seemingly without much introspection but once in awhile you find one that makes you pause and take note. Recently I took note!! It was both the writing and photo that had me in awe. Granted it was playing on a soft spot of mine; photography and my Asian fetish. The photo was an aerial shot displaying the perfect expression of a young Asian boy in the grass assumingly going through tickle torture by Mr. Captivation. The scene and expressions is one that can be easily seen in a gallery shot.
I find myself looking at the photo and wondering who is this person; is he kind, generous, fun, charismatic, curious, spontaneous…who knows…
To my luck, Mr. Captivation lives in another city so who knows if we will ever meet. But this photo indeed spoke a thousand words AND brought a smile to my face.

Dear Gems from Jen,
I have a pretty simple question (I think). I never know what to put in the subject line of an email I’m sending to a girl for the first time. I’m sure the girls I’m messaging are getting a lot of emails from other guys as well and I want to be able to stand out. Any ideas, hints or tips???
Much appreciated,
David
Dear David,
Standing out from the competition is the key here. Not everyone is getting bombarded with emails, but you want to ensure yours are read. The subject line is the first clue that you have read through their profile. My best suggestion is keep it short and hit upon a common interest. For example, if a woman has the same religious ideals as you then something along the lines of: I agree with your beliefs regarding religion, seems like we have a lot in common. If a woman you are interested in is an animal lover try this: I enjoyed reading your profile, especially the part about loving animals. Or, you could let her know that you have the same feelings regarding animals and state; from one animal lover to another.
Stay away from subject lines that contain sexual innuendos and flattery regarding looks. Some men make the mistake of using the subject line as a pick up line. You don’t want to sound cheesy or creepy. In other words, don’t use the subject line to come on too strong. Women that are serious about meeting someone want to know that you took the time and energy to read through their profiles thoroughly. You want to stand out from the crowd and connect from the earliest point possible. The best way to do this is follow my suggestions above and let the women that you are emailing know you have something in common with them and that you are sincere in your interest.
Signed,
Gems from Jen
