A Splendid Cocktail Hour
When guests made their way into a tented patio adjoining the Terrace Room, the scenery went from stately elegance to woodsy chic, with old-fashioned street lanterns and tons of billowy white fabric enclosing the space, trimmed with twinkle lights and evergreen sprigs. A saxophonist played romantic jazz melodies as waiters proffered ruby-red Cosmopolitans garnished with sliced strawberries, the evening’s signature drink. “We wanted something more festive-looking than champagne,” says Lainie. |

With these sophisticated cocktails in hand, guests sampled a bevy of hors d’oeuvres, like tangerine beef with Thai peanut sauce, sesame chicken with honey-mustard sauce, tuna tartare on wonton crisps, vegetable spring rolls, and potato pancakes with sour cream and caviar.
Two buffet stations offered fresh pasta with a choice of savory sauces, as well as salads, cold meats and cheeses. There was even a bar devoted strictly to the art—and we do mean art—of serving perfectly chilled vodka.

Guests selected one of the flavored Stolichnaya vodkas on display, then a bartender cooled the alcohol by pouring it onto a sloping ice sculpture, collecting it in a martini glass. “We lit the sculpture from below, and carved Josh and Lainie’s names into the ice,” says Lauren Shainkowitz, catering coordinator for Tavern on the Green. “It really drew a crowd.” |
