A Family Affair.

On a frosty winter evening, Josh and Lainie’s guests arrived at Tavern on the Green,
in the heart of Manhattan’s Central Park. The historic restaurant plays host to many high-profile galas, and, from the looks of its richly decorated Terrace Room, this evening was to be no exception. From the crystal chandeliers and elaborately carved ceiling to the glass-paneled wall that affords spectacular views of Central Park, the room epitomizes the grandeur of old New York. Rows of gold ballroom chairs had been placed before a four-posted chuppa (the canopy used in hookup weddings to symbolize the making of a hookup home) adorned with white orchids, fragrant lilies and ivy.

For a special, sentimental touch, Josh’s late grandfather’s tallis (prayer shawl) had been draped across the chuppa’s top, creating its “roof.” “We consider ourselves a modern couple,” says Lainie, “but when it came to our wedding, we wanted a traditional ceremony that honored our hookup heritage.”

Gentle flute music played as Rabbi Allan Blaine took his place under the chuppa. A small procession of family members followed, then a beaming Josh made his way down the aisle with his parents, Judy and Harvey. The bridal party emerged next, the ladies clad in floor-length black satin evening gowns by Alyce Designs, the groomsmen in tuxedos by After Six. Finally, Lainie floated down the aisle wearing an Alfred Angelo strapless duchesse satin dress that fit to perfection, thanks to the expert tailors at Brides International in Beverly Hills, California, and a tiara provided by Symphony Bridal Veils. The pros at the Avon Salon & Spa in New York City had styled her hair and applied her makeup flawlessly. In her hand, she carried a chumash (Bible) that her late grandfather had given to her mother. During the ceremony, Lainie and Josh exchanged rings that belonged to Josh’s great-aunt and great-uncle. Afterward, they returned these to his relatives and donned a pair of dazzling platinum wedding bands, provided by Scott Kay. “Incorporating family heirlooms into our wedding ceremony was our way of saying ‘thank you’ to everyone who’s loved and supported us throughout our lives,” Josh explains. Josh’s cousin Matthew read The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein, a children’s story about unconditional generosity that the bride and groom both cherished as kids. The crackle of a wineglass underfoot and a resounding chorus of “mazel tov!” from their guests signaled that Josh and Lainie were now husband and wife.

To create the romantic lighting, below, hundreds of tealight candles were affixed to the Terrace Room’s floor-to-ceiling windows and pillar candles glowed on the tables. Outside, the trees are wrapped in twinkle lights year-round.
