For the past 20 years, Joseph Shapira has been actively involved in business development and acquisitions in the international business arena. In 1995, Shapira and partner Alon Carmel forecast the enormous growth potential of online dating sites. In 1997, Shapira and Carmel formed MatchNet PLC. As a start-up company, both Shapira and Carmel worked "hands on" in the software development, design and implementation of the companys business model. MatchNet launched its first product in 1997 - 100hookup.com, which has gone on to become the largest network of hookup singles in the world with more than 150,000 members. In October 1999, Shapiro initiated and oversaw the companys acquisition of Cupid's Network, Inc., which included AmericanSingles.com, one of the leading Web sites in the Internet dating market. With this solid foundation, a series of additional online dating services were soon established, including DeutscheSingles.com, FrenchSingles.com, BeMatched.com and EuroSingles.com. Shapira continues to drive the company in its acquisition and development of international romance sites. Prior to MatchNet, Shapira was a principal in Sha-Rub Investment Company, a real estate development company specializing in acquisition, improvement and resale of commercial and residential properties in Southern California. Shapira attended the Ort Singlavosky Institution of Technology in Tel Aviv, Israel.

Alon Carmel has served as director and president of MatchNet since its formation in 1997. Both Shapira and Carmel were key architects in the conceptualization and development of 100hookup.com. Carmel's prior ventures with long-time partner Shapira include co-founding a videocassette manufacturing and duplication firm, Video Tape Industries, Inc., which became one of the leading videocassette manufacturers/duplicators in the Western United States and Matrix Video Duplication Corp., which went public on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. Together, Carmel and Shapira were principal players in a leading Southern California real estate management and development firm specializing in acquisition, improvement and resale of commercial and residential properties in Southern California. Carmel attended the Technion - Israels technical institute in Haifa.
