It began with me searching through different 100hookup profiles when I came across Jennifer’s. I sent her a brief message in which I wrote that I liked her profile and wanted to see if she would to meet for coffee and get to know each other. A harmless little meeting where if it didn’t work out, we would move on.
We both met at Starbucks, which is ironic because neither one of us likes coffee. And what we both expected to be a 30-45 minute conversation turned into 3 1/2 hours, and could have gone on longer, but I had to “cut it short” and get going to work. All that night and the next day, I couldn’t stop talking about the amazing person I met. So, that night I called Jennifer up and asked her if she wanted to go on a date, which she gladly accepted… and was anticipating.
I picked Jennifer up at her home and we went for sushi at a place called Little Brothers. Then we went bowling, which is where everything came together for the two of us. We played three games. She beat me, without me letting her win, the first game. And towards the end of the first game and the beginning of the second game things were getting a little flirty. After about the fifth or sixth frame, she got a strike and I gave her a high-five and pulled her in for a hug. Our eyes met and everything seemed right, and we had our first kiss. And from that moment on, we’ve both felt like we have been on cloud nine. A week later we officially became boyfriend and girlfriend on November 3rd, 2012.
I knew after a month or two that this was the woman I wanted to marry. So sometime in late-April or early-May, I started planning the proposal. I knew I wanted it photographed, so I had my best friend (who was also my wedding photographer and a groomsman in my wedding), and his wife accompany me and Jennifer to the beach in Port Hueneme. Jen thought we were doing some portrait pictures. So when we got on the beach I said that I needed to make something official before we do these “portrait pictures.” I got down on one knee and asked Jennifer if she would marry me. She shouted with joy with her hands to her face with excitement and said, “Of Course!” The portrait pictures we ended up taking was a proposal session, which we used for our Save the Date announcements. That was June 12th, 2013. And on our one-year anniversary (November 3rd, 2013) of being boyfriend and girlfriend, we got married and became husband and wife. What an amazing year it has been! We can’t wait to see what’s in store for us for the future.
What information do we have for everyone else out there? As everyone has probably said, don’t judge a book by its cover. Just because the picture on the profile isn’t that great, doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a chance. And get to know them in-person instead of judging solely based on an online profile. Some people may not be that good at describing themselves online and you need to actually meet with them so they can verbally say what they like and enjoy doing, and what qualities they are looking for in a partner.
And one more tid-bit of advice: when messaging, the shorter the better. Don’t go into a full essay about what you do and don’t like about a person’s profile. Be short and sweet and make the first meeting harmless if you’re a little nervous. Chatting over coffee is best because you don’t want the date to get awkward halfway through, and still have the rest of the date to get through.
