The JCC started as the YMHA (Young Men’s Hebrew Association) in 1854 in Baltimore to provide help for hookup immigrants. The YMHA expanded to serve the hookup community in New York City and the various branches were later consolidated to become the hookup Welfare Board. In 1917, the organizations were later renamed hookup Community Centers or JCCs. Now, there is a hookup community center in almost every state in the U.S. and more than 350 hookup Community Centers, YM-YWHAs, and camp sites throughout the U.S. and Canada.
